Dulcimers, Drums and Organs – Oh My!

  • November 10, 2022

WCUC’s first ever Instrument Exploration event was a success! Children (and adults!) were treated to fascinating demonstrations of unique and engaging instruments and plenty of time to explore the wide variety of sounds and playing techniques. Have you ever seen a shruti box or psaltery? Have you ever played a hurdy-gurdy? We did, and it was impossible to pick a favorite! A very special thanks to Jim Barkovic and Nan Gibbons, our new Young People’s Music Director, for sharing their instruments and their musical gifts with us.

Youth Enjoy a Fabulous Fall

  • October 17, 2022

The year is off to a great start for the Youth Group. We opened with a fun game night/pizza party to kick off the new church year. We then welcomed new and returning students to Sunday morning classes in September and October, and ventured out to the Davis Farmland Mega Maze to enjoy an evening of lawn games, live music, a giant corn maze, food trucks, and a festive atmosphere. The spirit is alive and well in this creative, energetic, and kind group of young people.

Check out the pictures from our gorgeous afternoon at Carver Hill Orchard! The apples were plentiful, the cider donuts were delicious, and the fun time with friends was fantastic. One of our favorite fall traditions!

A Wonderful End to Summer Worship

  • September 8, 2022

The Welcome Garden was filled on Sunday as we celebrated the end of our summer worship season outside. A very festive fellowship time followed with food, drink, games, and the creation of a huge mandala in the center of our labyrinth. Check out the pictures from the beautiful day!

Celebrating Pride, Open & Affirming, and Susan!

We had a big celebration on June 12th at the end of our program year. Take a look!

Feeling the Holy Spirit on Children’s Sunday

  • June 8, 2022

The children did an amazing job leading worship for our congregation on Sunday, June 5th, as we celebrated Pentecost! The service was filled with a rousing Scripture drama, an interactive sermon, two special Junior Choir performances, a variety of talented readers, a graduation blessing, and a WHOLE LOT of Holy Spirit. It was a morning of joy and celebration!

Taking Care of God’s Creation

  • April 27, 2022

In honor of Earth Day, the WCUC youth set out to learn, explore, and volunteer at Mass Audubon’s Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Belmont, MA. While there we spent some time with other volunteers on various projects including removing invasive species in the woods and along the trails, and cleaning up a community garden. We also enjoyed a photo exhibit in the art gallery and a rejuvenating walk around a pond filled with wildlife sightings, birds singing, and a glorious sun-filled spring breeze. For anyone interested in nature, we highly recommend checking this place out! https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/habitat

Exploring Holy Week in Sunday School

  • April 21, 2022

On Palm Sunday, our children experienced Jesus’ final week through a variety of multisensory stations and activities. Check out the pictures of our journey!

Station #2: Cleansing the Temple – Using shaving cream, the children wrote or draw ideas of what needs cleaning up in our world or things they might be sorry for. Then they smoothed it away and were able to start over.
Station #3: Jesus’ Last Supper – Here, our children heard the story of Jesus’ final meal with his disciples and then enjoyed a small meal together with bread and juice
We also explored a variety of artistic interpretations of Jesus’ Last Supper. Which one is your favorite?
Station #4: The Garden of Gethsemane – Praying and meditating quietly with rocks in our garden
Station #5: Good Friday – Here, our children completed our Holy Week journey by dyeing eggs with natural food dyes: cabbage, tea, onion, beet, and turmeric. We buried them in color, just as Jesus was buried on Friday, and then had to be patient while we wait for the surprise. We will open our dye jars after Easter to discover what they look like inside!
